Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine mark the World Day of Decent Work

Ukraine (Newly Independent States )

Trade unions around the world are once again mobilising on October 7, the World Day for Decent Work, under the banner “End Corporate Greed”, with activities stretching from Japan to Ecuador and South Africa to Russia.

Ukrainian trade unions headed by the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine (KVPU) took to the central Kiev streets in joint solidarity with all workers around the Globe to demonstrate unity and determined will for decent work.
More than 100 KVPU members (medical workers, coal-miners, railway workers, airplane attendants, educators and entrepreneurs) gathered at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in Kiev to attract the government’s attention in order to:

-  Stop non-payment of the salaries;
-  Carry out the indexation of salaries;
-  Increase social standards;
-  Save working paces, and not to destroy enterprises, including the ones in coal-mining industry;
-  Not to aggravate the current labour legislation.

Representatives of Independent Trade Union of Coal Miners of Ukraine from “Lviv Coal Company” and coal mine #1 called “Novovolynska” who have the wage arrears of 14,5 mln Hryvnas (around 700000USD) –three months’ salary debts –announced a termless hunger strike at the building of the President of Ukraine’s Administration.

At the end of the demonstration the KVPU handed over a petition and trade unionists’ demands to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
